Earlier this year Provincial Sign Systems was awarded the Prototyping Phase of the new transit shelters that will be hitting the streets in Montreal.

The first prototype shelter was installed on Sunday November 7th, 2010 and two more will be installed before the holiday season. The new shelters are sleek glass cubes featuring yellow and blue stripes. They’ll include benches, STM network maps, signage showing bus schedules and routes, as well as motion-sensors that turn up lighting when people approach and enter the shelter. All of the shelters will feature lighting, with some connected to the electrical grid and others powered by solar panels.

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) describes them as “bus shelters of the 21st century.”

STM chairman Michel Labrecque stated, “We’re a ‘design city’ and we want to improve the customer experience”, when asked why fancier shelters were needed. The STM is trying to improve its image and increase ridership, he noted.

With the new shelters and bus-stop posts, “people will tell themselves – ‘Sharp. I’m in something that’s sharp. It’s not only motorists who are in vehicles that are cutting edge. My bus is nicer, my stop is nicer, the shelter is nicer,’" Labrecque said.
